“Media literacy” is the ability to understand and critically analyze the influence of the mass media on our lives. I feel that media literacy is very important to understand so that we are not fooled or controlled by the media. The media is exposed everywhere and at any moment they could easily lead you to believe in false information. There are certain people that believe anything the media says and those people are controlled by the media. That is not good because now those people are relaying that false information to other people causing a flow of false information. I’m not saying all the media is false but you need to understand what the truth is and what isn’t. We need to make sure you are in control of your life and the media isn’t in control. A lot of people think that the media doesn’t affect them but in some aspect it does. For example, politic discussions and voting’s affect how the government decides on running things or certain rules that are made. Media is a good and bad guide, it just depends on how you view it.
I agree with your point that media literacy is a necessity to fully understand and take seriously. The media is very much a part of our lives and it is only right to be completely literate on how to view it correctly, its negative consequences when used incorrectly and also the benefits of the media. As critical thinkers, it is important that we can set aside the true and false information that the media provides. The world has many varying opinions and every single one is voiced. This is why we have to learn to hear it all out and then decide which is the most important logical one and stand behind it.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you. The media sometimes takes advantage of how much influence they have on people’s everyday life and use this influence to make us believe what they want. Like you said, we need to become better critical thinkers and analyze what is true and what is false. The best way to do this, from my point of view, is to try and not limit where we get our information from. We need to view as many different perspectives on the information given to us in order to be able to come up with our own conclusions. We need to make sure that we are in control, not the media.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you on the topic of media because it is essentially taking over everyone's lives. Sometimes its hard to listen to media because you never know what to believe especially because many media sites could be biased on one subject and not tell the other side of the story. I feel like we should avoid this by not listening to the outside world but instead form complex ideas of our own and share our opinion with the rest of the world in order to get our voice out there. We can't let the media tell us how to live our lives.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that media literacy is a very important skill to have. Without being able to understand and analyze the influence of the mass media on our personal lives, we are very vulnerable to the tactics the media uses to manipulate our thoughts and actions. I have known a couple people who believe anything they read in magazines; there is no better word to describe them than gullible. You also brought up a very good point because media plays a huge role in the elections of government officials. Influential language and deception by the media may lead us, as a nation, to pick under-qualified officials.
